Thesis title:  Recent tectonic evaluation of Cauca-Romeral Fault System near Medellín (Colombia) and some implications on seismic hazard.

The aim of my study is to define the geological, geomorphological and structural conditions of the Cauca-Romeral Fault System near Medellín (Colombia). The Cauca-Romeral Fault System is thought to be a strike-slip fault system that separates the Central and Western Cordilleras of the Colombian Andes. During my study I will determine the degree of activity of the fault system in the above zone, by combining geological and geomorphological examination (e.g. compilation and synthesis of previous work, photo interpretation, outcrop description, trenching and, if possible, dating). The results will improve our knowledge of seismic hazard in the area, and consequently will reduce the uncertainty related to this matter in Medellín, which provides a considerable part of the Gross Domestic Product of Colombia.

Los objetivos de este estudio son definir las condiciones geológicas, geomorfológicas y estructurales de algunas trazas del Sistema de Fallas Cauca-Romeral cerca de Medellín (Colombia). Este sistema de fallas ha sido considerado como un sistema de rumbo que separa las cordilleras Central y Occidental de los Andes Colombianos. También es objetivo de este estudio, determinar el grado de actividad de tales fallas en la zona mencionada, combinando análisis geológicos y geomorfológicos tales como: recopilación de trabajos anteriores, fotointerpretación, descripción de afloramientos, trincheras y posiblemente dataciones. Los resultados ayudaran mejorando el conocimiento de la amenaza sísmica y consecuentemente se reducirá la incertidumbre relacionada con este aspecto de una importante ciudad que genera una notable cantidad del Producto Interno Bruto de Colombia.
