Thesis title:  Tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the Aburra Valley, northern Colombian Andes.

Supervisor:  Prof. S. Yamauchi (2001-2003).

The aim of my project is to carry out tectonic and sedimentary studies to develop a model for the origin of the Aburra Valley, which is an anomalous physiographic feature in the northern part of the Central Colombian Andes. The Aburra Valley is located near an important strike-slip fault system (the Cauca-Romeral System), and forms a deep incision above extensive high plains. The thickness and lithofacies of the alluvial and slope sediments in the valley are also anomalous. My study will be based mainly on analysis of air photographs, topographic maps at differing scales, previous field work, and compilation of drilling information. I am seeking evidence to either corroborate or to discard the possible origin of the Aburra Valley as a strike-slip basin.

El Valle de Aburra constituye un rasgo morfológico particular hacia el norte de la Cordillera Central Colombiana, presentándose como una fuerte incisión en medio de las extensas superficies de erosión dominantes. Este valle esta localizado cerca de un importante sistema de fallas de rumbo (Sistema Cauca-Romeral). Además, dentro del el se presentan extensos y antiguos depósitos aluviales y de vertiente cuyo origen y relaciones estratigráficas aun no son claras. El objetivo de este proyecto es desarrollar estudios tectónicos y sedimentarios que permitan corroborar o descartar la hipótesis de una génesis tectónica para el valle, asociada con el sistema de fallas de rumbo mencionado. Dicho estudio se desarrolla a partir de fotointerpretación, análisis de bases topográficas (en diferentes escalas), trabajo de campo e información de perforaciones.
