Thesis title:  Study of large older landslides based on geomorphological evolution in the Aburrá Valley, Colombia.

The Aburrá Valley, located in the Central Cordillera axis, is characterized by steep slopes covered by debris and mud flows of great extent. Many landslides have occurred on these slopes over the last 50 years, due to the effects of encroaching urban sprawl. To date, all studies aimed at hazard estimation have focused solely on these high recurrence, small scale landslides which are associated with human intervention. Consequently, the aim of my research is hazard evaluation of the larger and older landslides formed during the geomorphological evolution of the Aburrá Valley. The region to be examined includes the present built-up area and zones of future urban expansion. During my study I will prepare a landslide distribution map, carry out detailed geomorphological characterization of specific landslides, and examine the implications of geomorphological slope evolution to the current hazard estimation. Finally, I intend to develop new criteria for landslide hazard evaluation in tropical valleys, based on geomorphology. My study will be based mainly on detailed geomorphological analysis of air photographs taken over various intervals, topographic bases at different scales, previous field work, and compilation of previous work. The results will permit better urban planning and disaster prevention programs, new aspects of hazard estimation, and identification of new high landslide hazard areas.

El Valle de Aburrá, localizado en el eje de la Cordillera Central, está caracterizado por laderas de fuertes pendientes cubiertas por depósitos de lodo y escombros de gran extensión, donde en los últimos 50 años se han presentado gran número de deslizamientos debido al acelerado crecimiento urbano hacia las laderas, lo que a llevado a la gran mayoría de estudios de amenaza hayan sido enfocados hacia aquellos deslizamientos generados por intervención antrópica. Por lo cual el objetivo de mi investigación es el estudio de la amenaza por antiguos y grandes deslizamientos a travez de la evolución geomorfológica del valle. Se presentará la distribución de dichos deslizamientos en el valle, una detallada caracterización geomorfológica de algunos importantes deslizamientos con miras a evaluar la amenaza y las implicaciones de la evolución de las laderas que enmarcan dichos deslizamientos, y que permitan en el futuro programas de prevención y una acertada planeación de la ciudad.
