Thesis title:  Geochemical variation of late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in time and space, South western Colombia.
Supervisor:  Prof. Y. Sawada (2002-2004).

Recent volcanism in the Colombian Andes forms part of the Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ) (Harmon et all., 1984). The volcanics have the calc-alkaline character typical of active continental margins. The geodynamic setting of Colombia is related to subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the Andes Block. Factors such as crustal thickness, incorporation of sediments or fluids derived from the Nazca plate and the depth to the Benioff zone will all have played important roles during the formation and ascent of the magmas.

The aim of my project is to acquire petrographic, geochemical, and geochronological data for selected late Cenozoic volcanic rocks from Southwest Colombia, to interpret geochemical variations in time and space. My study area is located in SW Colombia between the Western and Central Cordillera, and focuses specifically on the Azufral, Galeras and Dona Juana volcanoes.

Spanish.
