Thesis title:  Use of the sawdust of the species Gmelina arborea Roxb. by means of transformation hydrolytic like source of biomass for diverse purposes.
Supervisor:  Prof. Tohru Uehara (2005-2007).

The volume of refuse produced from forests and in the timber industry is an obstacle for the effective maintenance of forests and the utilization of the source.

In Colombia, Gmelina arborea Roxb. generates high volumes of solid residuals. Sawdust is the main residue of the wood production, but through pre-hydrolysis it is possible to determine an optimum regime to obtain a source of biomass which can be put to diverse uses.

The objective of my study is to determine the organic and inorganic potential of sawdust of the species Gmelina arborea Roxb. and its possibilities as biomass and to obtain optimum regimens of pre-hydrolysis for the sawdust of this species.

By use of a Hydrolyser and statistical treatment of the data, mathematical curves will be obtained that will represent the pre-hydrolysis process at various combinations of temperature and times of reaction, to determine the percentage of Total Substances of Reduction (TSR). This will allow determination of optimum conditions.
