Thesis title:  Geochemistry of the N’Guba and Kundelungu Groups, Katangan Supergroup: Tectonic setting and sediment provenance.
Supervisor:  Dr B.P. Roser (2002-2004).

My study aims to further knowledge of these two groups in the Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic Katangan succession in Katanga province, in the southeastern part of the D.R. of Congo. The succession includes three main groups. These are: the basal Roan Group, which contains the rich stratiform Cu-Co-U mineralisation constituting the Central Africa Copper belt, and extends southward to Zambia; the overlying N’Guba Group and the Kundelungu Group (uppermost). Because the latter two groups are of less economic interest, they have been little studied compared to the Roan Group. The few studies which have been made in these two groups were localised in areas where the N’Guba Group contains Pb-Zn-Cu vein-type mineralisation, like that in the Kipushi and Kengere Areas. My study involves determination of the chemical compositions of the sediments (using XRF and solution ICP-MS whole rock analysis), use of the geochemical data to investigate evolution of the Katangan basin during deposition of these sediments, implications for the genesis of the Pb-Zn-Cu deposits, and documentation of any geochemical change at the Proterozoic/Paleozoic transition.
