Thesis title:  Petrography of High-grade metamorphic rocks from central Sri Lanka.
Supervisor:  Prof. Akira Takasu (2003-2005).

The island of Sri Lanka is located south east of India, and is formed predominantly of Precambrian rocks that occur in several major terrains. These rocks form major litho-tectonic units, namely the Highland, Wanni, and Vijayan Complexes. The boundary between the Highland Complex and the Vijayan Complex is defined as a sheared thrust contact, whereas the boundary between the Highland and Wanni Complex is still poorly defined. The rocks forming the Highland Complex are mainly granulite facies metamorphites, whereas those of the Vijayan Complex are of amphibolite facies grade. The Wanni Complex is composed of amphibolite to granulite facies rocks. Due to the variety of rock types present and the occurrence of amphibolite and granulite facies terrains in a relatively small area, Sri Lanka remains of much interest for studies of petrology, geochronology and structural geology.

My research will focus on the metamorphic petrology of high-grade metamorphic rocks from central Sri Lanka.

The main aims of my study are:

From this work, I hope to contribute new findings to the study of the metamorphism of the high-grade Sri Lankan terrains.
