Thesis title:  Geochemistry and Petrology of Tertiary sedimentary sequences in the Eastern Folded Belt (Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tract) of the Bengal Basin.
Supervisor:  Assoc. Prof. B. P. Roser (2007-2009).

Neogene sediments are exposed in the flank of the Eastern Folded Belt of the Bengal Basin in the Sylhet Trough and in the Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. The Eastern Folded Belt is the only hydrocarbon-bearing district in the Bengal Basin. Several gas fields have been discovered within the Tertiary sequence, and exploration for gas is continuing. Although many sedimentological and geological studies have been carried out, modern geochemical studies of the Tertiary succession are few. This study concentrates on the Tertiary sequences in the Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts area, from the geochemical and petrographic viewpoints.

Specific objectives of my study are:

  1. Establish the mineralogical characteristics and petrographic classification of the Tertiary sandstones and stratigraphic variation within the succession, based on modal compositions;
  2. The geochemical characterization of both sandstone and shale at a formational scale, and their geochemical variation with geologic time, based on whole-rock data;
  3. Determination of the nature of the source rock of the Tertiary sequence;
  4. Interpretation of the tectonic setting of the depositional basin and the source area, using established petrographic and geochemical parameters (e.g. QFL, immobile element ratios);
  5. Interpretation of paleoclimatic and weathering history of the source, using CIA and PIA indices;
  6. Comparison with results for stratigraphically equivalent formations in the Sylhet Trough.

To achieve the goals of this study I will undertake detailed petrographic study to prepare a detailed qualitative and quantitative database and description of all rocks. EPMA (electron probe micro analyzer) will be also used to identify mineralogical constituents of the sandstones if necessary. I will also use XRF and ICP-MS for to determine major element, trace element and REE compositions of the sediments.

The results are expected to improve understanding of the paleographic setting and configuration of the area, and thus contribute to exploration for hydrocarbons in Bangladesh.
