Thesis title:  Gold mineralization and genesis of the Gatsuurt deposit in Central Northern Mongolia.

The North Khentei metallogenic belt contains many vein-type gold deposits, one of which is the Gatsuurt gold deposit, the subject of my thesis. The Gatsuurt deposit is located approximately 170 km north of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The North Khentei gold belt forms part of the north-east trending North Khentei tectonic belt, which is bounded to the northwest and southeast by the Bayangol and Yeroogol fault systems respectively. The Gatsuurt deposit is located in a tectonic region along the Sujigtei fault that forms part of the Yeroogol system. It consists of disseminated and vein-type gold mineralization hosted by early Devonian volcanic, early Paleozoic granitoid, and early Paleozoic meta-sedimentary rocks (Tumur et al., 1995).

General exploration of this deposit has been carried out in detail, whereas the gold mineralization, especially gold genesis and its relationship with host rock, is poorly understood. Consequently, my study is focused on characterization and genesis of the Gatsuurt gold mineralization.

My study investigates the mineralization stages, present, describes gold genesis, and provides a model for the gold genesis and primary mineralization. This model can be applied to other similar deposits which are distributed along the North Khentei trend.
