Myanmar contains fourteen onshore sedimentary basins. The Central Myanmar basin (CMB) area is a central part of Myanmar, and is bounded to the east by the Sagaing Fault, and to the west by the Indo-Burman Ranges (Fig. 1). The CMB is an oil and gas-prone onshore basin, and contains Eocene, Oligocene, and Miocene argillaceous sediments and coals (Fig. 2).

My study area is located in the Western Trough, which is forms part of the CMB. The Western Trough is bounded to the east by the Central Volcanic Line, and by the Indo-Burman Ranges in the west. The study area contains Neogene and Paleogene sediments of the forearc basin to the east, and also Cretaceous sediments of the eastern portion of Indo-Burma Ranges to the west (Fig. 1).

Geophysical and geological exploration has been carried out in the CMB but organic geochemical data are few. I will study the sedimentary organic geochemistry of the succession which provides the petroleum and gas, in order to decrease risk in exploration activities in Myanmar. The study area will be investigated by using geochemical data to estimate source rock distribution, gas-generation potential of coals, maturation history, and depositional environment. The results of this study will be of great help for petroleum exploration.
