Thesis title:  Metamorphic conditions of eclogites and associated metamorphic rocks in the Alag Khadny metamorphic complex and its tectonic implications, Lake Zone, SW Mongolia.

Metamorphic rocks and ultramafic bodies, including the first occurrences of eclogites and associated kyanite-garnet-chloritoid schists, occur in a matrix of gneisses, marbles and mica schists in the Alag Khadny metamorphic complex in the Chandman district, in the Lake Zone of SW Mongolia (Fig. 1). The Lake zone consists mainly of Cambrian island arc volcanic rocks containing fragments of ophiolites. Typical topography in the study area and an eclogite outcrop are shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively.

The aim of my study is to determine the precise metamorphic evolution; and geochronology of metamorphic rocks of the Alag Khadny metamorphic complex, especially for eclogites and associated kyanite-garnet-chloritoid; and discuss their tectonic behavior in relation to development of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). I will use electron-probe micro analysis (EPMA) and age dating methods such as U-Pb, K-Ar, and Sm-Nd age dating to define the chemical compositions of constituent minerals and the geochronology of metamorphic rocks in the Alag Khadny metamorphic complex.

The study of eclogites and associated metamorphic rocks are significant for providing better understanding of the tectonic implications of the CAOB, which constitutes one of the largest orogenic belts in the world.
