Thesis title:
Study of high pressure (HP) and ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks in the Makbal district
in the Kyrgyz Northern Tien-Shan.
Supervisor:
Prof. Akira Takasu (2012-2014)
The Makbal district in the Kyrgyz Northern Tien-Shan is located in the western segment
of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB).
The metamorphic rocks exposed in the Makbal district are divided into the Akdzhon and Scharkyrak Groups
based on their metamorphic conditions (Fig 1.).
The Akdzhon Group contains HP and UHP metamorphic rocks, whereas the Scharkyrak Group
underwent greenschists facies metamorphism.
The Akdzhon Group is divided into two contrasting metamorphic formations, the structurally lower Makbal Formation
and the structurally overlying Neldy Formation.
The Scharkyrak Group unconformably overlies the Neldy Formation.
The Makbal Formation is mainly composed of metaquartzites and garnet-talc-chloritoid schists,
which carry evidence of UHP metamorphism, i.e. coesite inclusions in garnets
(e.g. Tagiri and Bakirov, 1990; Tagiri et al., 2010).
Eclogites occur as lenticular bodies within the UHP matrix.
Aims:
-
(1) To reveal the metamorphic conditions and the metamorphic P-T paths of the HP
and UHP metamorphic rocks of the Neldy Formation, the Scharkyrak Group and weakly metamorphosed ophiolites,
most of which have not been studied to date.
-
(2) To determine the protolith age of the weakly metamorphosed ophiolites and the metamorphic ages of the Neldy Formation,
the Scharkyrak Group and the weakly metamorphosed ophiolites. No such geochronological data exist at present.
-
(3) To analyze bulk rock chemistry of the constituents of the weakly metamorphosed ophiolites,
and compare their compositions with eclogites and basic schists in the Makbal and Neldy Formations.
-
(4) To synthesize the results of (1) – (3) and discuss the tectonics in the western segment
of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.
