Landslide hazards in Vietnam

Landslides are common geo-disasters, caused by both natural processes and human activities. In recent years, the incidence of landslides has increased, and their consequences are growing. In Vietnam, landslides occur mainly in mountainous areas. On 16th February 2012, a landslide occurred on National Route No.6 in Hoa Binh city, taking the lives of two people. On 15th April 2012, landslides occurred in the Phan Me coalmine in Thai Nguyen city, and six people were killed. Each year landslides occur frequently along the roads in Vietnam, especially along the Ho Chi Minh National Highway. Landslides in Vietnam thus take lives and cause serious property damage.

Purpose

Landslide hazards are extensive in Vietnam. Multiple factors may trigger landslides. Of these, rainfall and geological structure are the main factors. Rainfall intensity and geological structures in different regions in Vietnam vary widely. At present, studies of the effects of rainfall and geological structures on landslide hazard in Vietnam are very limited. Therefore, I will focus on this problem during my study in Japan.

Research method

  1. Data collection of rainfall and geological structures in Vietnam;
  2. Laboratory tests using portable dynamic undrained ring shear apparatus and direct shear apparatus;
  3. Model slope tests with differing rainfall intensity and geological structures in the laboratory;
  4. Numerical simulation.

Expected results

  1. Determination of the effects of differing geological structures on landslides, during the same rainfall intensity;
  2. Determination of the effects of differing rainfall intensities on landslides, but with the same geological structure;
  3. Construct landslide hazard maps in Vietnam, based on rainfall and geological structure;
  4. Establishment of monitoring and early warning systems.
