Thesis title:  Use of geochemistry as a geoindicator to assess the environmental effects of small scale gold mining in Caldas Province, Colombia.
Supervisor:  Dr. Barry Roser (2002-2004).

Small-scale gold mining in Colombia often uses rudimentary techniques, may lack planning, and takes little account of concepts of sustainable production. This combination can result in serious environmental degradation and contamination, especially in streams, soils, and landscape from the physical point of view, along with the concomittant negative social impacts.

Geoindicators are actual measures used to describe geological processes on the surface of the crust, and give a means of establishing if changes in the environment have occurred over short time frames (Berger, 1996).

My study will focus on baseline geochemistry as a geoindicator, using the chemistry of fine-grained stream sediments collected in an area of less than 70 km2. The field area includes sites of vein gold exploitation in the Malteria and Marmato Mining Districts. This research will combine geological and mining information, new field data, further analysis of some existing laboratory data, and new analyses, and will make recommendations on how to use such results as assessment and decision-making tools. It will also give some guide to how geochemistry can used as a prospecting guide in the area, and how much environmental impact previous mining has caused.

La pequeNa mineria de oro en Colombia, generalmente utiliza tecnicas rudimentarias sin planificacion minera y sin una mentalidad de produccion sostenible; teniendo como resultado una seria deterioracion y contaminacion especialmente en sedimentos, suelos y paisaje, consecuentemente con los respectivos impactos sociales negativos.

Los geoindicadores, son medidas reales que permiten describir procesos geologicos en la corteza terrestre, haciendo posible conocer y describir los cambios producidos en el ambiente, durante cortos periodos de tiempo (BERGER 1996).

Mi estudio estara fundamentado en la linea base geoquimica, como geoindicador, usando quimica de de sedimentos activos finos en dos regiones con mineria de veta, en un area menor a 70 km2: El Distrito Minero de Malteria y el Distrito Minero de Marmato. Este estudio combinara, informacion geologica y minera, datos actualizados tomados en campo, analisis de estudios de laboratorio preexistentes, calculos y comparaciones; obteniendo conclusiones y recomendaciones para la toma de decisiones en procesos de planificacion. Asi sera posible tener una idea de como la geoquimica es utilizada no solo como una guia en prospeccion, sino tambien en el conocimiento de los impactos ambientales que la mineria ha producido.
