Thesis title:
Petrogenetic investigation and age determination of Cenozoic flood trachyte-phonolite of Kenya Rift.
Supervisor:
Prof. Y. Sawada (2001-2003).
The general framework and some of the topics to be investigated in my study are:
-
Fieldwork will include structural studies and sample collection within the study area in Kenya.
Ar-Ar and K-Ar geochronological studies will be conducted to constrain the major tectonomagmatic events
in the East African Rift System.
-
I will examine the different petrological and geochronological processes responsible for
the nature and origin of evolved volcanic rocks (mainly trachyte and phonolite) in the East
African Rift System (Kenya). Partial melting, fractional crystallisation (FC), and combined
fractional crystallisation and assimilation (AFC) are the principal petrogenetic processes
involved during emplacement of the magma. Their investigation will allow better understanding of
the petrogenesis of the felsic rocks.
-
Trace element and isotopic data will be used to define the source and geotectonic setting
during emplacement of the felsic magmas. Magnetostratigraphy based on hydrogen and carbon isotope age
determination will also be of assistance.
The influence of the Precambrian basement on the rift structures will also be examined,
as it has been suggested that the reaction of the former controls the latter.
-
Particular attention will be given to establishing the relationship between environment
and volcanic activity in the Kenya Rift.
